Traction control / stability light
Also called: ESC light, ESP light, car with squiggly lines, traction light
Safe to monitor
Flashing while driving on a slippery road is normal. If it stays on, drive gently and have it checked.
What it means
A flashing light means the system is working right now to stop the wheels from spinning or sliding. A steady light means the system is switched off or has a fault.
Step by step
- If it flashes, ease off the accelerator: the road is slippery.
- If it stays on, check you have not switched the system off with its button.
- If it stays on after a restart, have it checked; it often shares a fault with the ABS.
Can I keep driving?
Yes. Take extra care in wet or icy conditions.
What the colours mean
Amber light: something needs checking soon.
Symbols and colours vary between makes and models. Your owner's manual has the exact list for your car. General information only. Every car is different: check your owner's manual, and if anything involves brakes, steering, tires or a burning smell, have a qualified mechanic look at it before you drive on.
