Power steering warning light

Also called: steering wheel light, EPS light, electric power steering

Fix soon

Steering may become much heavier. Drive slowly and have it checked soon.

What it means

The power steering system has a fault. The steering still works but can need much more effort, especially at low speed.

Step by step

  1. Try stopping, switching the engine off and restarting: some systems reset.
  2. If the steering is heavy, drive slowly and avoid tight manoeuvres.
  3. Have the fault read at a garage.

Can I keep driving?

Carefully, if you can steer comfortably. If the light is red, stop.

What the colours mean

Amber light: something needs checking soon.

Symbols and colours vary between makes and models. Your owner's manual has the exact list for your car. General information only. Every car is different: check your owner's manual, and if anything involves brakes, steering, tires or a burning smell, have a qualified mechanic look at it before you drive on.
