Glow plug light (diesel)
Also called: coil light, diesel preheat light
Safe to monitor
Wait for it to go out before you start the engine. If it flashes while driving, book a check.
What it means
On diesel cars the glow plugs warm the engine before starting. The light goes out when the engine is ready to start.
Step by step
- Turn the key to the ignition position and wait for the light to go out, then start.
- If it flashes while driving, the engine has a fault: have the code read.
Can I keep driving?
Yes. A flashing light while driving needs a check soon.
What the colours mean
Amber light: something needs checking soon.
Symbols and colours vary between makes and models. Your owner's manual has the exact list for your car. General information only. Every car is different: check your owner's manual, and if anything involves brakes, steering, tires or a burning smell, have a qualified mechanic look at it before you drive on.
