Hybrid battery replacement cost

Quick answer

Out of warranty, a replacement hybrid battery usually costs about $1,500 to $3,500 in the US, depending on the car, and some Prius quotes have reached around $4,000. Refurbished packs cost roughly half as much but come with a much shorter warranty. Check your warranty first: many newer hybrids are covered for 8 to 10 years.

Typical cost$1,500–$3,500≈ £1,200–£2,700≈ €1,400–€3,200≈ A$2,300–A$5,300out-of-warranty hybrid battery, fitted (estimates from 2020–2022)

Hybrid batteries fail less often than many people fear, and most newer hybrids have a long battery warranty. If yours does need replacing out of warranty, you have three main choices: a new pack, a refurbished pack, or a repair of the faulty cells.

This page is about the large high-voltage battery that helps drive the car. Hybrids also have an ordinary 12-volt battery for starting the electronics; that one is much cheaper, see our car battery replacement cost guide.

A refurbished pack is a used battery that has been tested, with weak cells replaced. It is cheaper, but its cells are already aged, so it may not last as long as a new one. A used pack from a scrapped car can be cheaper still, but it comes with no real guarantee and still needs professional fitting.

Some carmakers give a credit when you hand back your old battery. In Clean Fleet Report's example, Toyota's core credit took a first- or second-generation Prius battery from a list price of $3,650 to about $2,300 before labor.

What the warranty covers

Check this before you pay for anything.

  • Toyota (US): 10 years or 150,000 miles240,000 km on the hybrid battery for 2020 and newer models, including the Prius, Corolla Hybrid, Camry Hybrid and RAV4 Hybrid. Earlier models were covered for 8 years or 100,000 miles160,000 km.
  • States that follow California's emissions rules: hybrid batteries have often been covered for 10 years or 150,000 miles240,000 km.
  • Other brands: many cover the hybrid battery for 8 years; Clean Fleet Report gives 8 years or 80,000 miles130,000 km as a common term.
  • UK and Europe: Toyota dealers offer extended hybrid battery cover that is renewed each time the car is serviced at a Toyota dealer, up to a maximum age. Ask your dealer for the current terms for your car.

Warranties cover faults, not accident damage, and they may require the car to have been serviced on schedule. Your warranty booklet or a dealer can tell you exactly what applies.

How long hybrid batteries usually last

SlashGear cites a hybrid specialist's estimate of 8 to 10 years, or 120,000–160,000 miles190,000–260,000 km. Real cars vary widely: Clean Fleet Report notes that some owners of older nickel-metal hydride hybrids replaced their battery at about 70,000 miles110,000 km, while others got 200,000 miles320,000 km from the original. Very hot or very cold weather and a lot of age can shorten battery life.

Signs a battery may be weakening:

  • A hybrid system warning light on the dashboard.
  • Fuel economy dropping noticeably.
  • The petrol engine running more than it used to.
  • The battery charge gauge jumping quickly between high and low.

Any of these is a reason to have the hybrid system tested. A faulty sensor or cooling fan can cause similar symptoms and costs far less to fix.

DIY or garage?

How to help it last

  • Keep the battery's cooling air intake clear. On many hybrids it sits near the rear seats; your owner's manual shows where.
  • Drive the car regularly. Long periods of standing are hard on any battery.
  • Service the car on schedule, which also keeps any battery warranty valid.
  • Buying a used hybrid? Ask for proof of a recent hybrid system check and how much battery warranty is left.

Questions drivers ask

How long does a hybrid battery last?

Often 8 to 10 years, or roughly 120,000 to 160,000 miles (190,000 to 260,000 km). Many last much longer, and some owners report 200,000 miles on the original pack, while a few have needed one far sooner. Heat, cold and age all play a part.

Is a hybrid battery covered by warranty?

Usually, for a long time. Toyota covers the hybrid battery on 2020 and newer US models for 10 years or 150,000 miles; older hybrids were commonly covered for 8 years. Terms differ by brand, model year and country, so check your warranty booklet or ask a dealer.

Should I buy a refurbished hybrid battery?

It can make sense on an older car you do not plan to keep for many years. A refurbished pack costs roughly half as much as a new one, but its warranty is usually short, often 6 to 18 months, and how long it lasts is less predictable.

What are the signs of a failing hybrid battery?

A hybrid system warning light, the petrol engine running much more than usual, falling fuel economy, and a charge gauge that swings quickly between full and empty. A garage with hybrid diagnostic equipment can test it.

Can I replace a hybrid battery myself?

No. It is a high-voltage system that can kill. Have it done by a dealer or a hybrid specialist.
