Car battery replacement cost
Quick answer
A complete battery replacement at a US repair shop is about $449 to $486 by RepairPal's national estimate, but buying from a parts store that fits it free can bring that down to roughly the price of the battery, from under $100 for a basic one. In the UK, RAC Mobile Mechanics customers typically paid £140 to £350. Cars with stop-start need AGM or EFB batteries, which cost more.

What pushes the price up or down
- Battery type. A standard flooded battery is cheapest. EFB (enhanced flooded) batteries cost more, and AGM (absorbent glass mat) batteries cost the most. In ThePricer's example, a Group 35 AGM cost about 74% more than a comparable flooded battery.
- Stop-start. Cars with stop-start usually need an AGM or EFB battery. AAA recommends replacing a battery with the same type the car came with, and the RAC warns the wrong type can cause electrical faults. Do not downgrade to save money.
- Registration or coding. Some cars need the new battery registered with a diagnostic tool, which can add to the bill (see below).
- Your car. Size and access matter. Some batteries sit under a seat or in the trunk, which takes longer to reach. In RAC data, averages ranged from about £228 for a Ford to £294 for an Audi.
- Where you go. Parts stores that fit free are usually cheapest in the US. Dealers tend to charge more. Mobile mechanics come to you, which helps when the car will not start.
- Location. Labour rates differ by area. In RAC data from early 2026, prices ranged from about £209 in Brighton to about £284 in Gloucester.
Battery registration and coding
Many modern cars have a battery management system that tracks the battery's age and adjusts charging to suit it. A new battery behaves differently from a worn one, so the car needs to know it has been replaced.
According to battery maker Varta, cars fall into three groups:
- Self-learning: the car works out that the battery is new on its own. Varta lists brands including Fiat, Honda, Mercedes, Peugeot, Renault, Toyota and Volvo.
- Registration with a diagnostic tool: the new battery must be registered. Varta lists Audi, BMW, Jaguar, Land Rover, Mazda, Mini, Seat, Skoda and Volkswagen, and some BMW and VW group models need a battery-specific code.
- Depends on the model: including Ford, Hyundai, Kia, Nissan, Vauxhall/Opel and Porsche.
If registration is skipped or done wrong, Varta says stop-start can be restricted or stop working, fuel use can go up and some comfort features can be limited. When you get a quote, ask whether registration is included. Check your owner's manual, or ask the garage, before swapping the battery yourself.
How to avoid overpaying
- Get the battery tested first. A flat battery is not always a dead one; it may just need charging, or the real fault may be the alternator.
- Check the type and size in your owner's manual or on the old battery's label, so you are not upsold or sold the wrong one.
- Compare a parts store, an independent garage and a mobile mechanic. Ask whether the price includes fitting, registration, tax and disposal.
- Check the date code. Buy a battery that is fresh from the shelf, not one that has sat for many months.
- Look at the warranty. Quality batteries often come with three years or more of free replacement, according to AAA; pro-rated warranties cover less after that.

Questions drivers ask
Can I put a cheaper standard battery in a stop-start car?
No. If your car came with an AGM or EFB battery, replace it with the same type. A cheaper flooded battery can upset the charging system and wear out quickly. The RAC warns that the wrong type can cause electrical faults.
What is battery registration or coding?
Many newer cars have a battery management system that adjusts charging to the age of the battery. After a replacement, some makes need the new battery registered with a diagnostic tool so the car knows it is new. Skipping it can restrict stop-start and other functions.
What is a core charge?
In the US, many stores add a refundable deposit, often around $12 to $22, to the battery price. You get it back when you return the old battery for recycling.
Is it worth replacing a battery before it fails?
If it is over three years old and fails a test, yes. Replacing it on your own schedule is cheaper and less stressful than a callout or tow when it dies.
