Brake pad replacement cost

Quick answer

Replacing the brake pads on one axle usually costs about $150 to $450 in the US, or about £65 to £270 in the UK for front pads. The car you drive matters most: a small hatchback sits at the bottom of the range, a large SUV or performance car at the top.

What pushes the price up or down

  • Your car. Pads for a compact car are cheap; trucks, SUVs, luxury and performance cars need bigger, pricier pads. In UK booking data, front pads on a Hyundai cost about £78–£138, on a BMW about £104–£241.
  • Where you go. Dealers charge more per hour than independent garages and chains.
  • Pad type. Ceramic pads cost more than organic or semi-metallic ones but often last longer and make less dust.
  • Discs. If the discs are worn below their minimum thickness, they must be replaced too, which can more than double the bill.
  • Extras. Seized caliper pins, a new wear sensor or a brake fluid change all add to the price.

How to avoid overpaying

  1. Get two or three quotes for your exact car, and ask whether they include parts, labor and tax.
  2. Ask to see the old pads and the disc measurement before agreeing to new discs.
  3. Check what's included, for example cleaning and lubricating the slide pins and a road test.
  4. Don't wait for grinding. Replacing pads when they start to squeal is the cheapest moment: once they are worn to metal, you will pay for discs too.

Questions drivers ask

Should I replace front and rear pads at the same time?

Not necessarily. Pads are replaced per axle, in pairs. Front pads usually wear out first because the front brakes do most of the stopping.

Do I need new discs every time I replace the pads?

No. Discs can often stay for a second set of pads. A mechanic measures their thickness against the minimum stamped on the disc; ask to see the measurement if they recommend new ones.

Why is the dealer quote so much higher?

Dealers usually charge higher hourly labor rates and fit original-brand parts. An independent garage using good-quality pads is often cheaper for the same job.

How long does a brake pad change take?

About an hour per axle at a garage, sometimes less. Plan on a couple of hours if you do it yourself for the first time.
